Musk Pledges One SpaceX Share to Every American Kid; Trump Wants Them in Trump Accounts

Elon Musk posted on X on October 19 that he will give every child in the United States one share of his rocket company, SpaceX, next year. “Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many,” he wrote. There are roughly 73 million children under 18 in the United States, according to 2024 Census data. Musk offered no details about how the proposed giveaway would work.

The pledge followed an exchange with Anthropic, which had announced a Public Benefit Fund starting with 5% of its shares — with up to roughly 20% of shares eventually committed to public benefit as the company’s value grows. Musk replied that Anthropic should give shares directly to the public, then said he would do the same himself. President Donald Trump thanked Musk on October 20 in a Truth Social post, calling him a “legendary friend” and tying the plan to the administration’s Trump Accounts initiative, a children’s savings program designed to let families, government programs and private donors contribute assets directly to eligible children’s accounts.

“A BIG THANK YOU to our legendary friend, Elon Musk, for his incredible generosity in giving SpaceX Stock to millions of American children through TRUMP ACCOUNTS!” Trump wrote, adding that the plan matched the program’s original vision of bringing together the private sector to invest in children and “give every American Child a piece of the American Dream.”

The honest caveats: a pledge is not a plan. No mechanism, timeline, eligibility rules or legal structure have been disclosed, and distributing equity to 73 million minors would be an enormous administrative undertaking. It also lands the same week SpaceX reports its own Q3 results. Treat this as a headline pledge to watch, not a done deal.
