Toyota Recalls 2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrids Over Software That Can Kill Power While Driving

Toyota is recalling 30,978 units of the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid in the US over a software defect that may cause the hybrid system to shut down while driving. Owners will receive free software updates by early December.
The root cause is a manufacturing issue with the motor generator electronic control unit (MG-ECU): the motor initialization process may not complete correctly, which can prevent the electric motor from operating as intended at higher speeds. Warning lights will illuminate, and the vehicle may enter fail-safe mode or shut down entirely — a loss of motive power that raises the risk of an accident.
The defect also hit Australia, where Toyota announced a recall on October 9 covering about 5,925 plug-in hybrid RAV4s (two-wheel-drive XSE and four-wheel-drive GR Sport variants) built in 2026. Australian owners will be contacted in writing to schedule a free dealer fix.
If you own a 2026 RAV4 PHEV, schedule the software update as soon as Toyota notifies you — and remember that open recalls are repaired free of charge and can dent resale value until they’re closed.
