Beta Technologies Beats Joby and Archer to a First: FAA’s First-Ever eVTOL Market Survey Certificate

In a surprise to much of the industry, Beta Technologies — the lesser-known contender behind Joby and Archer in the electric air taxi race — received a first-of-its-kind “Special Airworthiness Market Survey Certificate” from the FAA on October 21, The Motley Fool reported. The certificate covers Beta’s ALIA eVTOL, also known as the A250, and lets the company fly potential customers on demonstration flights so they can experience the aircraft before committing.

The commercial logic is direct: a delivery company considering the A250 for cargo, or an operator weighing passenger use, can now board the actual aircraft and judge fit firsthand — turning interest into potential orders. Beta was already punching above its weight in the White House-backed eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, selected for seven of the eight projects — the most of any company, ahead of Joby’s five and Archer’s three.

The honest caveats matter. This is not FAA type certification — the official design-approval stamp — and it does not authorize Beta to sell air taxi tickets to the public, nor its customers to fly commercially today. Still, for a company that has lost roughly half its value since its debut last fall, the certificate is a tangible regulatory first and a sales tool no rival currently holds.
