China Forecasts a Record 22% Plunge in 2026 Vehicle Sales, With Only a Meager 2027 Recovery

The China Passenger Car Association expects the Chinese vehicle market to shrink sharply this year, with a record 22% plunge in 2026 sales and only a weak rebound forecast for 2027, Automotive News reported on October 29. The association points to tightening subsidies and rising costs as the drivers of the decline.

The forecast lands on top of evidence already visible in company results. Toyota’s China sales fell 19.7% in September, their eighth straight monthly decline, and Renault cited fierce competition from Chinese entrants in its own key markets as a drag on its third-quarter volumes. In other words, the pressure runs both ways: foreign brands are losing ground inside China, while Chinese brands are exporting that competition to Europe and Latin America.

For buyers and investors, the implication is a market defined by price pressure rather than growth. A 22% contraction, if it materializes, would force deeper discounting, faster consolidation among weaker Chinese brands, and harder choices for global automakers about how much capacity to keep aimed at China. The forecast is a projection, not a result — but it is the industry’s own trade body warning that 2026 will be remembered as a down year, not a blip.
