You Can Buy a Flying Car Today: Pivotal Helix Opens Reservations at About $190,000

A future with flying cars now lives in Palo Alto, California, where Pivotal has opened reservations for its Helix aircraft at a price of about 190,000 dollars, with delivery possible less than a year away. The company behind the aircraft has quietly spent more than a decade turning a radical idea into a real product, and Helix is the result: a single-seat, electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft that a buyer can actually reserve today.

Pivotal traces back to 2009, when founder Marcus Leng began developing an electric aircraft that could take off vertically without gasoline. Leng became the first person to fly the real thing in 2011 under the BlackFly name, the company moved to the Bay Area in 2014 and revealed BlackFly publicly in 2018. Leadership shifted in 2022 when Ken Karklin took over as chief executive, and under his watch the company moved from experimental flights to customer reservations and structured training.

The regulatory detail that makes Helix shoppable is its classification: as a fixed-wing eVTOL it falls under the FAA Part 103 ultralight category, the same class as a hang glider, which means a buyer does not need a pilot license to fly it. That distinction, plus a price near 200,000 dollars and a delivery window under a year, makes Helix the closest thing yet to a flying car a private buyer can actually own, even if it is a single-seat recreational aircraft rather than a family car with wings.
