Tesla Robotaxi Registry Tally Hits 769 in Texas, Still Trailing Waymo as NHTSA Answers Come Due October 30

By October 27, 2026, Texas registry data cited by trackers put the registered Cybercab count at 349. Reports based on Texas registry data put the combined Tesla autonomous-vehicle fleet, including Cybercabs and Model Y robotaxis, at roughly 739 vehicles in an October 9-10 snapshot, compared with approximately 1,185 for Waymo. By October 26-27, a further 30 Cybercabs were reported, taking the registry total to 769. Tesla own public figure is 300-plus Cybercabs serving Austin, and trackers caution that the company figure has not been independently verified and no government agency has published its own audited count of active, revenue-generating Cybercabs.

The regulatory calendar is now as important as the fleet count. Reports indicate that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an audit query into how Tesla certifies that the Cybercab meets federal safety requirements, with Tesla sworn responses reportedly due by October 30, 2026. Reporting stresses that this is a standard regulatory inquiry process and does not, on its own, indicate a finding of a safety defect. The Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle built without a steering wheel or pedals, accessed only through the Tesla Robotaxi app, with no manual driving fallback inside the vehicle.

The commercial plan still points to Dallas next. Tesla said on October 21 that it plans to launch Cybercab service in Dallas in November 2026, after Austin, and it already operates supervised Model Y robotaxi service in Dallas and Houston. The gap between the registry count and the company count is the number to watch: if Dallas launches on schedule, the registry should show it within weeks, with or without a company announcement.
