Waymo Adds Nearly 250 Square Miles of Robotaxi Coverage Across Five U.S. Cities

Waymo is adding nearly 250 square miles of driverless robotaxi coverage across Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area, The Electric Viking reported October 28, citing Fortune. Total coverage passed 1,400 square miles as of May 2026, with service active in 15 U.S. metros and weekly paid rides over 500,000.

The scale underneath the expansion is what separates Waymo from every other robotaxi operator. The company logged over 14 million paid trips in 2025, triple its 2024 total, and averaged 3.9 million rider-only miles per week in Q2 2026. Its annualized revenue was estimated at $355 million as of February 2026 — still small against Alphabet, but real, paid, recurring revenue from driverless rides, not a pilot subsidy.

The five-city push also shows the competitive gap in operational terms. While rivals debate single-city milestones, Waymo is widening five maps simultaneously, which spreads fixed costs — mapping, remote assistance, fleet operations — across more paying rides. For riders in the newly covered areas, the near-term benefit is practical: more coverage, potentially lower wait times, and a driverless option that is becoming ordinary rather than novel.
