Waymo Borrows $5 Billion in Its First-Ever Debt Deal as Robotaxis Become Bankable

By CARC Editorial Team · October 26, 2026 · 3 min read

Waymo closed its first-ever debt deal, a $5 billion term loan led by PIMCO, Blackstone and Sixth Street, with Goldman Sachs as sole bookrunner and a lender list that includes Apollo, Blue Owl, Fidelity and T. Rowe Price. It is the company first debt raise, coming eight months after a $16 billion equity round at a $126 billion valuation. Waymo calls it a step in its evolution into a scaling commercial enterprise.

Why a loan matters more than another equity round: debt lenders underwrite cash flows and collateral, not just a growth story. A $5 billion term loan signals that major credit investors now treat a robotaxi fleet as a financeable asset, which lets Waymo expand without diluting shareholders at every step. That is a structural advantage over rivals still funding each city launch from equity or a parent balance sheet.

The money arrives as the race goes international and political. The same week brought Tesla Cybercab fleet growth in Austin, a new NHTSA file on Tesla robotaxis in school zones, San Francisco geofencing robotaxis away from its Fleet Week waterfront, union drivers rallying against a Washington robotaxi bill, and Uber and Pony.ai planning London robotaxis. Waymo now has the capital to answer all of that with more cars in more cities, which is the only answer that has ever settled a transport race.
