Waymo Nearly Doubles Orlando Service to 120 Square Miles, Adding Downtown and Ivanhoe Village

Waymo announced October 27 that it is adding 53 square miles to its Orlando service area, bringing total coverage to 120 square miles and nearly doubling where its robotaxis can operate. The expansion pushes farther east and adds more downtown coverage, including City Hall, the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and the Orlando Science Center, plus Ivanhoe Village.

The Orlando story is a move from tourists to residents. When Waymo launched in Orlando in February, service was largely focused on the tourist corridor, though parts of downtown were already included. The company opened rides to everyone in April and has been expanding ever since. Anyone can now hail a driverless vehicle through the Waymo app, provided pickup and destination are both within the service area.

Downtown coverage changes the use case. Tourist-corridor rides are often one-off novelties; downtown rides are commutes, dinners, shows and errands — the repeat trips that make a robotaxi network economically real. Orlando’s expansion, landing the same week as the five-city push, shows Waymo treating Florida as a core market, not a showcase.
