Waymo vs Tesla, in Miles: 3.9 Million a Week Against 558,000

Waymo is adding nearly 250 square miles to its driverless ride-hailing service over the next week across five cities it already serves — Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area — according to the company’s October 27 blog post. Electrek notes that the expansion is about as big as Tesla’s entire Houston Robotaxi geofence after this week’s expansion, which Robotaxi Tracker puts at about 254 square miles with 34 vehicles in Houston.
The mileage comparison is starker. Electrek reports Waymo logged 3.9 million rider-only miles per week in the second quarter of 2026, while Tesla’s driverless fleet did 558,000 miles in its latest reported week, mostly in Austin — a different week, so the comparison is directional, not a head-to-head race on the same days. Even allowing for that caveat, the gap is roughly seven to one, and it reflects a structural difference: Waymo operates a large, multi-city, rider-only fleet, while Tesla’s driverless service is still concentrated in Austin and Houston with a much smaller vehicle count.
Waymo’s expansion strategy is also different in kind: it is widening the map inside cities it already serves, rather than naming a new city. In Los Angeles it extends to the South Bay including Torrance, in Nashville further south including the zoo, in Orlando nearly doubling eastern coverage with enhanced downtown service, in San Diego north to La Jolla, and in the Bay Area further south including a new BART connection at Berryessa Station. The company did not break out square mileage by city or say how many vehicles it is adding. That restraint is the point: Waymo’s growth right now is measured in square miles and rider-only miles, not in new-city announcements.
