Alef Marks 1,000th Flying-Car Flight and Needles Tesla: "We've Been Here Alone for 11 Years"

Bay Area flying-car startup Alef Aeronautics picked a pointed way to mark a milestone on October 15, releasing video showing its prototype lifting off and flying over a row of parked vehicles — including a Tesla Roadster and a Tesla Cybertruck — according to reports from Electrek and Gizmodo. The company said the clip captured its 1,000th logged flight, and CEO Jim Dukhovny used the occasion to needle the world's most famous electric car maker directly: "Welcome, Tesla, to the flying car race. We've been here alone for 11 years."

The timing was not an accident. Tesla has spent much of 2026 promoting its next-generation Roadster as a vehicle that can briefly leave the ground using cold-gas thrusters developed with SpaceX, a claim that has generated its own wave of coverage and skepticism since the October 15 unveiling in Texas. Alef's response, in effect, is to remind the market that an actual eVTOL company has been flying crewed and uncrewed prototypes for over a decade while Tesla is still demonstrating a car that hops.

The clip travelled far beyond the usual aerospace press, picked up by outlets from Al Jazeera to Australia's news.com.au. That is the point of the exercise: in a crowded eVTOL field where Archer, Joby and Beta are all chasing FAA certification and commercial launch, Alef is claiming the one credential nobody else can — a decade of actual flights. Whether that history converts into a certified, sellable vehicle is still an open question, but as a piece of industry theater, the 1,000th flight did its job.
