Ford Fathom: A $28,350 Electric Truck That Can Power Your House

By CARC Editorial Team · October 28, 2026 · 3 min read

Ford put a price on its smallest electric truck this week: $28,350 for a Ford Fathom with the standard-range battery, Tech Insider reported October 28, with pre-orders opening in early 2027 for the 2028 model year. Car and Driver’s coverage frames the truck as a way to power a house, and the headline claim — the cheapest American EV capable of powering a house — is the number that will stick.

Ford’s own wording is more careful, and the distinction matters. The company says the Fathom can send electricity from the vehicle to a properly equipped home, and that it carries an integrated power inverter for two-way energy flow. It also says the add-on home hardware it needs will cost far less than the equipment Ford sold for its first bidirectional system. What Ford has not released, in the reporting available as of October 28, is the actual price of that hardware.

That missing price is the whole ballgame for the home-backup pitch. A $28,350 truck plus expensive home equipment is a different proposition from a $28,350 truck plus cheap equipment, and buyers comparing the Fathom against a stationary home battery should wait for the hardware number before doing the payback math. On the truck itself, though, the price alone resets expectations for what a new electric pickup can cost.
