Omoda X Debuts Globally With BEV and PHEV Options; Rugged Concept Hints at Duster Rival

The Omoda X SUV made its global debut on October 21 at the 2026 Chery Group International User Summit in Wuhu, China, with both battery-electric and plug-in-hybrid options on offer. Separately, Autocar reported on a new Omoda concept that hints at a future rival for the Dacia Duster: a rugged new crossover with night vision, big ground clearance and — notably — physical climate controls, a deliberate rejection of the all-touchscreen trend.

The context is Omoda’s remarkable ascent. The brand arrived in the UK only in late 2024 alongside sibling Jaecoo, yet between January and the end of September 2026 it ranked as Britain’s 23rd best-selling brand — ahead of long-established names like Citroën, Mazda and Suzuki. In Malaysia, bookings opened for the Omoda C7 and C7 PHEV in August, with the C9 PHEV AWD launched from RM208,800. The X and the rugged concept suggest the next phase is broadening the lineup beyond the style-led SUVs that built the brand.

The Duster-hinting concept is the more interesting signal. The affordable rugged-crossover segment has been Dacia’s private hunting ground; a Chinese-built rival with night vision and real ground clearance — at Chinese pricing — would test whether the Duster’s moat is the car or just the price.
