Toyota Recalls 228,367 Sienna Hybrids Over Seat Backs That Can Disengage in a Crash

Toyota is recalling 228,367 Sienna Hybrid seven-passenger vehicles in the United States, covering the 2022–2026 model years, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration posted on October 27. In certain frontal crashes, the force from the seat-belt pretensioner can move the second-row seat recliner mechanism, and under specific conditions that movement can disengage the seat back from its locked position.
If the seat back is not securely locked, it may fail to properly restrain an occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Most affected vehicles will receive a free update to the supplemental restraint system electronic control unit software at dealers. Vehicles fitted with the Mobility as a Service package use different seat hardware and will instead receive free replacement of both second-row seat backs.
Toyota plans to mail owner notification letters on December 7, 2026. Owners do not need to wait for the letter: check the VIN in NHTSA’s recall database or call Toyota at 1-800-331-4331, and schedule the free remedy. This is a large, mainstream-family-vehicle recall, and the fix is straightforward — the risk is in delay, not in the repair itself.
